Countries That follow the British Curriculum: A Global Perspective

British Curriculum

The British curriculum is probably the most widely used national curriculum all over the world. The reason is that the Commonwealth countries had to continue using the British curriculum in the mid-nineteenth century. As they could not create a completely original education system right after freedom. The British curriculum continued to grow stronger. And it became an icon of quality so that many of the commonwealth nations continued the British model of education as a better alternative to the local education systems.

Right now, the British curriculum is being used in 10,000 schools in 160 countries across the globe. But the main reason for the curriculum’s resounding success is that the curriculum retains the high-quality aspects of the British education system. But has wide flexibility for the regional languages, cultures, and religions. Hence, the education that the curriculum provides remains international as well as highly local and well connected with the roots of the children who are studying the curriculum.

  • A Hybrid Curriculum:

This curriculum is famous because switching from the British curriculum to the local curriculum and vice versa is exceptionally easy. And the student can simply switch schools at the beginning of the new year. The course change should not be an issue because the British curriculum carefully caters to the local curriculum expectations. So the children will not find too much disparity in switching between these curriculums.

  • The Spiral Structure:

The IGCSE has developed the curriculum in a spiral shape that gradually moves upward. The educational system focuses on deepening the knowledge that the previous classes are teaching. And t0he conceptual comprehension focuses on connecting various fields and bringing them together. It develops a bigger picture with a wider angle. The course plan focuses on developing practical skills like problem-solving, independent research, argument presentation, collaborative projects, and critical thinking are all skills.

  • The Complete Pathway:

The British curriculum is a complete journey from grade one to the last year of college education before university. Students learn according to international standards. They become familiar with international examinations such as SATs, IELTS, and others. Enrolling in an international program is not too hard for them.

The Stages:

The British curriculum comes in four stages that break down the journey of the student from primary to higher education. These stages are as follows:

  • Cambridge Primary: The Primary section is from ages five to eleven and mainly covers classes from grade one to grade six. The students develop the basics of learning in the section that are the building blocks of higher education.
  • Cambridge Lower Secondary: This is the first term of secondary education and focuses on three years, from age eleven to age fourteen. The classes are grades six, seventh and eighth. Students develop their specialized learning in these years as they are the precursor to specialized high school training.
  • Cambridge Upper Secondary: This is the last section of school years between the ages of fifteen and sixteenth. The years of ninth and tenth are the focus of this section of years.
  • Cambridge Advanced: Cambridge advanced is a form of examination that students can take at the end of school. The test evaluates their educational prowess and decides on how they will suit the university programs.

The Global Perspective:

The global perspective is a strong aspect of the British curriculum. It focuses on ensuring that students feel connected with the global community. They need to be able to connect their knowledge with international learning perspectives. So that they can use their knowledge abroad as well. The IGCSE is offering the program online and all British curriculum based schools have complete access to the program.

Cambridge IGCSE offers 70 subjects and higher education offers 55 subjects in the AS & A level. These subjects offered are a combination that students can choose from. The students usually choose subjects based on their interest and aptitude. So that they will have a clear core for the specialization that they choose for the university.

These are the main aspects of the modern IGCSE system that we have summarized here for your convenience. IGCSE is a great program that will give your children a strong and reliable future.
