Key Stage 1 curriculum: Mathematics

KS1 is an integral part of the National Curriculum of England which has been introduced with the Education Reform Act, 1988. When the national curriculum was first introduced, legally, it was valid for both England and Wales. It was later that England alone was subjected to the British National Curriculum. In the year 2014, the National Curriculum was planned to cover a large age group of local authority maintained schools present across England.

  • In year 1 maths, students studying under the KS1 maths curriculum should have clarity regarding the basics of mathematics. Such devices are definitely not to be supported in the year 1 maths itself and should only be introduced at a phase when they could be used to assist and not substitute the conceptual knowledge of the discipline.

Spoken Language:

The discipline of mathematics is not just about numbers. The nature, quality, and diversity of the languages in terms of what the students hear and speak go a long way in shaping their mathematical vocabulary and arriving at plausible conclusions for the same.

The national curriculum for mathematics has laid down the program of studying the subject in quite a comprehensive manner as it spawns over the different stages. Target group

KS 1 includes two years of schooling within the context of maintained schools in England and Whales. This pertains to year 1 and 2 and involves students in the age group of 5-7. However, Key Stage 1 may correspond to an infant school in certain cases. Other than the same KS 1 may as well form a part of the first or the primary school.
