Computing

Introduction

Computing is one of the important foundation subjects among the others which form the gamut. The program of study for computing foundation shares a common ground across year 1 and 2 of Key Stage 1.

Key Stage 1 curriculum: Computing

KS1 is an integral part of the National Curriculum of England which has been introduced with the Education Reform Act, 1988. When the national curriculum was first introduced, legally, it was valid for both England and Wales. It was later that England alone was subjected to the British National Curriculum. In the year 2014, the National Curriculum was planned to cover a large age group of local authority maintained schools present across England.

The Objective of the Study

The prime objectives of studying computing for students in KS1 include a precise understanding of algorithms, their implementation as programs on digital devices as well as their execution through provided instructions using the computing foundation. This shall further enable them to form and understand simple programs in computing.

Students should be instructed about

The guidance required by the students of KS1 through pursuing computing involves lessons on:

  • Using logical reasoning for speculating the behavior of simple programs and assessing the performance of digital content
  • Applying technology for the creation, organization, manipulation, storage, and retrieval of digital content
  • Identifying recurrent usage of information technology beyond school
  • Utilizing computing foundation to understand technology in a safe and respectful manner through ensuring the privacy of personal information as well as being aware of the possible mitigation measures which could help in instances of any possible social media mishap caused by digital content.

Target group

KS 1 includes two years of schooling within the context of maintained schools in England and Whales. This pertains to year 1 and 2 and involves students in the age group of 5-7. However, Key Stage 1 may correspond to the infant school in certain cases. Other than this, KS 1 may as well form a part of the first or the primary school.

Overview

The KS1 Computing Curriculum through the lessons ensure that the students are capable of understanding and using the basics of computer science, use mathematical functions to create programs, analyze and solve problems with practical computing experiences.
