Introduction

Key Stage 3 English Curriculum is a program of study which is deemed appropriate to meet the requirements of the secondary curriculum. The different activities like writing and reading are sought to be developed in a manner which can be considered as diverse and challenging. These activities also promote English vocabulary. Reading is sought to be encouraged extensively through key Stage 3 English Curriculum. Frequent reading practice for developing a sense of deep understanding and motivated by a desire for acquiring knowledge should be a consistent objective throughout Key Stage 3 English Curriculum.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum: English

KS3 is an integral part of the National Curriculum of England which has been introduced with the Education Reform Act. When the National Curriculum was first introduced, legally, it was valid for both England and Wales. It was later that England alone was subjected to the British National Curriculum. The terminology pertaining to the stage has been specifically elucidated in the Education Act of 2002 as “the period beginning at the same time as the school year in which the majority of pupils in his class attain the age of twelve and ending at the same time as the school year in which the majority of pupils in his class attain the age of fourteen.”

The Objective of the Study

The Key Stage 3 English Curriculum is modeled with the purpose of providing pupils with the capability to evolve skills like listening, writing, speaking and reading and increasing the English vocabulary. Students are expected to be able to express themselves confidently and also expand their knowledge of the English vocabulary. Additionally, students should be persistent in their effort of sharpening their writing skills, participate in English vocabulary test, and enhance their expertise in writing at length. Creative writing along with skills to write academic and formal essays and qualify English vocabulary test should be fostered. Since the students would be required to have an understanding of the audiences thought processes, they should keep themselves immersed in a blend of rich vocabulary and precise grammar rules.

Teachers would have the responsibility of enhancing the vocabulary of the students, emphasizing the development of their ability to comprehend the relation between words, the nuances in meaning and usage of figurative language, and encouraging them to participate in the more English vocabulary test. Adoption of an advanced approach to teaching can prove to be useless if the basic preparatory groundwork is shaky and students are not prepared for higher classes. Student-specific teaching based on the individual needs and requirements should be adopted as the norm. Target group

Key Stage 3 follows Key Stage 2 and encases three years of school teaching in maintained schools in Wales and England. This corresponds to years 7, 8 and 9, with the age of the students ranging from 11 to 14.

Overview

It is important that students should be conscious of the fact that their reading and writing skills are conditioned and regulated by rules of the English language. It is imperative that they should know how to construct sentences in a particular form. They should begin with a process involving consistent usage of age-relevant vocabulary for the purpose of writing, spoken language and reading.
